silhouettes

Whilst searching for fun wedding favours I came across a silhouette artist, Charles Burns, the roving artist. Unfortunately, he was booked up on the day of our wedding but I signed up for his news letter in the hope that I would be able to one day book him for another event.

Charles then sent out an email, requesting photo’s that he could use for a book he was writing and in return he would send a silhouette as a thank you. So I sent a few pictures and a silhouette of me got featured in the book!

Mastering Silhouettes is an instruction book into the art of silhouette portraiture. Its explains about all the techniques used in period and modern day silhouette portraits, advice on poses and materials and features of silhouette artist and their work.

As my silhouette was painted on glass so I went to meet Charles to collect it. I took Raphael with me and was lucky enough to see Charles in action as he did a portrait of Raphael.

It really is quite an incredible art form. The detail in the cutting is amazing, especially as it took less than a minute to do!

To welcome in the festive season Rob Ryan has released a tea towel that you can either dry the dishes with or make in to a christmas stocking!

Being Raphael’s first christmas I am ubber excited so I decided to give it a go and make him his very own stocking which he can keep for years to come!

It was really simple to make just follow the online instructions on Rob Ryan’s blog spot and you can’t go wrong!

A perfect project for the evening……

The end result!

On a trip back home to my folks, my mom, who has an eye for vintage, showed me a vintage alphabet tapestry she had picked up at a car boot. It was such a lovely piece and it got me thinking about its history – who made it, who was it for, where it had been and if it had become a family heirloom passed down through the generations.

Being pregnant at the time, I decide to create a little bit of family history by stitching a modern-day alphabet tapestry for our little baba’s room.

When searching for a pattern I came across wee little stitches selling contemporary cross stitch patterns. Their superhero alphabet was exactly the kind of pattern I was looking for!

Unlike ‘give me work‘ the superhero alphabet only came as a pattern. As I had already worked with Appleton Crewel wool on ‘give me work’ I decided to stick to what I was used to! I purchased my wool and canvas from sew exciting, an online haberdashery. They have been brilliant and so willing to help when I rang for advice.

So, I had my pattern, canvas and wool and got stitchin’…..

Call me a geek but I love to cross stitch!

Got the bug when I was looking for a new project and my hubby challenged me to stitch the Rob Ryan & Emily Peacock collaboration ‘give me work’. The tapestry came as a complete kit, all I had to do was follow the pattern!

Once I got started I became completely obsessed, stitching at every possible chance I could get until it was finally complete!

Here is the finished article mounted on a g-plan stool…
